Miniature Schnauzer:
Bringing a Miniature schnauzer puppy into your life is a wonderful experience for any dog loving family.
Mini Schnauzers have recently become one of the most popular small to medium sized family companion dogs worldwide- and it's easy to see why.
Miniature schnauzer puppies are a sensational and most adaptable all round package.
They possess a rare blend of energetic playful character, have a beautiful affectionate
nature and an intelligence which makes them quick learners.
Plus they have those distinctively rugged good looks and they don't shed!
When properly raised, socialized and trained a miniature schnauzer puppy is a pleasure to have in any household.
Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Appearance & Size:
Mini Schnauzers have a beautiful, some would say elegant look about them.
They stare up at you sporting a seemingly wise expression. They feature big dark oval shaped eyes and a thick bushy beard and eyebrows. When given adequate nutrition and exercise they have a strong square
build which is well muscled and athletic. The miniature schnauzer puppy features a thick double coat with a wiry top coat.
The coat requires grooming approximately 3-4 times a year and a good weekly brushing to keep the coat in top shape.
A bath is also advisable whenever needed. As I mentioned earlier, the miniature schnauzer coat does not shed- which is great if you suffer from allergies.
When fully grown a miniature schnauzer puppy stands at between 12-14 inches at the shoulder - they are a beautiful sight.
Mini Schnauzer Puppy - The All Important Temperament:
Miniature schnauzer puppies are much loved for their spirited, cheeky and highly affectionate nature- it's what makes this breed so appealing.
It needs to be said that the breeder of your miniature schnauzer puppy plays the most important role in determining the health, stability and temperament of your dog.
A reputable and responsible breeder has the well being of the breed at the forefront of every decision they make- they are not motivated by money.
They breed from quality stock, carefully plan each mating and screen all dogs for hereditary disease.
Your miniature schnauzer puppy breeder also has the crucial task of beginning your puppies early socialization.
If possible, always buy your puppy from a reputable mini schnauzer breeder
- it may save you and your family much heartache in the future.
A well bred, well raised, socialized and trained miniature schnauzer puppy is a delightful animal.
They are playful, feisty, protective, confident, stable, obedient, sensible and affectionate.
It's little wonder that owners of mini schnauzers become so attached, devoted and loyal to this great little dog breed.
The miniature schnauzer features a long list of attractive qualities:
- Miniature Schnauzers make excellent watchdogs.
They are ever alert, protective of their family and home and they possess a deep rumbling bark. - Mini Schnauzer puppies display many terrier like instincts and abilities.
They have lots of energy and courage and they love to chase after small game.
Fetching a ball is one of a miniature schnauzers favorite pastimes
(your arm will become tired well before your mini does!). - Miniature Schnauzers certainly are a breed that crave and thrive on human companionship.
They love to be involved in all family outings and activities (the beach is a favorite!)
and do not cope well when left alone and separated for extended periods. - Early puppy socialization is critical for many reasons.
One of the most important reasons is to ensure they will get along well with other dogs.
Miniature schnauzers can become dog aggressive if not properly socialized.
Meeting other dogs on walks and on outing with help with the socialization. - Any shyness or viciousness is considered a major fault in a miniature schnauzer puppy.
Avoid such a puppy if possible (and the breeder). If you've already got a puppy displaying such
behaviors seek professional help from a canine behaviorist. - Miniature schnauzers are generally good with children.
Once again socialization plays a crucial role in this, plus the children always need to show respect
towards the dog. Small children should never be left unsupervised with any breed of dog.
Health: The Miniature Schnauzer, has a lifespan of 12 to 18 years
Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Training:
Miniature schnauzers are highly trainable, quick learners and enthusiastic students
- they seem to love the stimulation and challenge that obedience training provides.
Training your mini schnauzer is a fantastic outlet for their energy, natural drives and intelligence.
Plus it is the prime time where you and your dog will develop and strengthen the bond you will share forever.
It's important to begin your training sessions as soon as your puppy arrives home - you can't start too early
(it's never too late though either!).
Miniature Schnauzer puppies respond best to non violent reward based dog training methods which rely
on repetition, consistency and positive reinforcement. When you start your training early you help to establish
good behavior habits in your puppy and at the same time will prevent many problem behaviors from ever arising.
I've listed a few training issues below that are specifically relevant to the owners of miniature schnauzer puppies
- remember to keep your training sessions short, intense and fun!
- Miniature schnauzer house training is one of the first training issues you will need to negotiate.
Most puppies are quick to catch on to the housebreaking process - as long as you clearly show them what
you want from them. Pick out a good puppy house training schedule and apply it with consistency and you
should get some great results with your miniature schnauzer puppy. - Another training skill for you and your mini to focus on is learning how to walk nicely on a loose leash.
If you don't teach this one early a miniature schnauzer puppy can develop a bad leash pulling problem
- they are strong little characters! - All of the basic obedience training commands such as sit, down, stay, come, heel etc. are well within the
capabilities of a miniature schnauzer puppy. They love to learn new behaviors and tricks.
Give them proper guidance, and reward desired behavior and you will fly through your obedience training. - Mini Schnauzers also excel at formal obedience, agility and dog sports
Schnoodle:
The Schnoodle is a hybrid breed that is developed by crossing a Poodle and a Mini Schnauzer.
Schnoodles are intelligent, people oriented, affectionate and obedient with a good amount of energy.
Their coats can vary from rough to soft and come in a wide variety of colors and are non-shedding
They love to exercise and play and make wonderful companion pets.
Due to the various sizes of both parent breeds, the Schnoodle can be a range of sizes from toy to standard size but are usually a mini to medium size.
Left unclipped, the face of a Schnoodle will often keep the characteristic beard of the Schnauzer.
Temperament of the Schnoodle:
The Schnoodle mixes the intellect of the Poodle with the companionship and devotion of the Schnauzer.
Schnoodles are very astute and may, for example, react very strongly to the sound of car keys, and know its owner is leaving the home on some errand. This makes the Schnoodle easy to train. Some Schnoodles pick up the Schnauzer-like habit of nipping at things, but are not a breed attracted to chewing up furniture.
While mischievous, Schnoodles are fun-loving, energetic dogs.
Since one of its parents is a Poodle, it may have a tendency to want a significant amount of attention and special treatment.
Schnoodle activity level:
The Schnoodle is an intelligent dog that adores human companionship and is suitable for small homes with a yard to burn off excess energy.
They need regular exercise and will benefit from a long walk, especially Schnoodles living in apartments or units with courtyards.
They enjoy living with an active family with children but are happy spending time on the couch with the family watching TV
so long as they get their daily walk or outside backyard run.
Schnoodle colors:
The Schnoodle comes in a wide variety of colors. They can be found in a wide variety of markings and colours from solid black, solid white, salt & pepper, blonde, liver, grey to parti and phantom markings.
Grooming your Schnoodle:
The amount of grooming required for a Schnoodle will depend on the length of its coat.
All coat types will require some grooming with the non-shedding Schnoodles also needing to be clipped as their fur does not fall out. Schnoodles with longer coats will need to be brushed daily to ensure they do not become
matted while clipped Schnoodles require less grooming. Some owners prefer the hair to be long and “shaggy”and therefore trim far less often. The hair texture is usually a blend of the Poodle and Schnauzer, producing soft hair with varying amounts of waves.
Training your Schnoodle:
Both Poodles and Schnauzers which make up the Schnoodle are highly intelligent breeds and the Schnoodle is a very quick learner.
This intelligence, coupled with the terrier desire to please the owner, makes most Schnoodles easily trainable.
The vocabulary of a Schnoodle is quite impressive, considering they are able to pick up phrases, such as “go get your toy” with ease.
Early socialization and obedience are recommended for all Schnoodles. The crate training method works best to house train Schnoodles as they prefer to go toilet away from where they sleep, but just be sure to let pups out from their crate as soon as possible.
Schnoodles do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods and training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency.
Some new puppy owners report that it can sometimes be difficult to keep their puppy’s attention for long periods of time so try to make training times short and fun. Also make sure your Schnoodle puppy will come when called in the backyard before going out to an unfenced area.
Health: The Schnoodle, has a lifespan of 12 to 18 years
